Released in 1993, this coin was authorized to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the birth of Thomas Jefferson.
Public Law 103-186 authorized surcharges to be paid to the Jefferson Endowment Fund:
(1) In the case of surcharges received in connection with the sale of the first 500,000 coins issued to be used (A) to establish and maintain an endowment to be a permanent source of support for Monticello and its historic furnishings; and (B) for the Jefferson Endowment Fimd's educational programs, including the International Center for Jefferson tudies; and (2) in the case of surcharges received in connection with the sale of all other such coins, to the Corporation for Jefferson's Poplar Forest, to be used for the restoration and maintenance of Poplar Forest.
The obverse design of the coin features an image of Thomas Jefferson that was based on the medallion portrait by Gilbert Stuart.
The reverse of the coin features a rendering of a Monticello elevation drawing produced by the Historical American Buildings Survey/Historic American Engineering Record of the National Park Service.
