Bronze replica of Congressional Gold Medal awarded to Native American Code Talkers, Lower Brule Sioux Tribe
Code Talkers medals commemorate Native American contributions to military operations in World Wars I and II. The Lower Brule Sioux Tribe Code Talkers Bronze Medal is a bronze replica of the Congressional Gold Medal awarded to Lower Brule Sioux Tribe Code Talkers in recognition of their dedication and valor.
The Code Talkers Recognition Act of 2008 authorized the United States Mint to strike and issue medals to recognize deserved Native American Code Talkers who created unbreakable codes for military communications that gave U.S. forces a significant advantage in combat. This innovative approach allowed U.S. forces to secure their communications, making it difficult for enemy forces to intercept vital information.
The obverse design depicts World War I soldiers, including a code talker transmitting and writing information. Behind them, a warrior holds an eagle staff. Inscriptions are “KUL WICASA” and “SICANGU LAKOTA,” the way the tribe refers to itself; “HECETU YELO,” a Lakota phrase that can indicate the end of a speech; and “CODE TALKERS.”
The reverse design features elements of the Lower Brule Sioux Tribal Seal and the inscriptions “LOWER BRULE SIOUX TRIBE,” “2008 ACT OF CONGRESS,” and “WWI.”
