Washington, D.C. — The U.S. Mint today announced that approximately 7,000 of the 1997 Proof Silver American Eagle Bullion Coins remain in inventory from its 1997 production run of 435,000 coins, which ended December 31. The 1998 Proof American Eagles is scheduled to go on sale in March. “The mintage level for the 1997 Proof Silver Eagle will be the fourth lowest since the program began, so with only 7,000 remaining, we expect to sell all of these coins within the next month,” said Mint Director Philip N. Diehl. The four lowest Silver Proof Mintage levels are: 357,200 coins in 1994; 390,900 coins in 1993; 407,000 coins in 1995, and the 435,000 coins in 1997. Priced at $23, the Proof Silver Eagle obverse features Adolph A. Weinman’s classic “Walking Liberty,” which orginally appeared on the U.S. half dollar in 1916.
