Washington — The United States Mint today announced that 2005–dated Golden Dollars and Kennedy half–dollars will be available in rolls and bags at www.usmint.gov beginning at noon on January 24, 2005 (ET).
In response to customer demand that the United States Mint make many of its 2005 products available earlier in the year, 2005 Golden Dollars are going on sale approximately three months earlier than the 2004 products.
Also in response to demand, the Golden Dollars are available in smaller bag counts of 250–coins; the 2,000–coin bags have been discontinued.
Customers can purchase Golden Dollars in 25–coin rolls for $35.50 and in 250–coin bags for $347.00. The rolls and bags bear either the United States Mint at Philadelphia mint mark “P” or the United States Mint at Denver mint mark “D.”
American sculptor Glenna Goodacre designed the obverse of the Golden Dollar coin, which features the likeness of Sacagawea, the young Shoshone woman who assisted Lewis and Clark on their exploration of the Louisiana Purchase almost 200 years ago. The reverse design of the coin, by United States Mint sculptor/engraver Thomas D. Rogers, Sr., features a soaring bald eagle and 17 stars, one for each of the states at the time of the Lewis and Clark expedition.
The 2005–dated Kennedy half–dollars will be available in two–roll sets (20 coins per roll) for $35.50, including one United States Mint at Philadelphia and one United States Mint at Denver mint mark coin roll. They are also available in bags of 200 that include an equal number of half–dollars with P and D mint marks, for $135.00.
The obverse design of the half–dollar features a portrait of President John F. Kennedy by Gilroy Roberts, the Chief Engraver of the United States Mint in 1963. The reverse design, by Frank Gasparro, the United States Mint’s next Chief Engraver, depicts the presidential coat of arms.
Both the Golden Dollar and the Kennedy half–dollar are circulating quality, struck on our main production floors at the United States Mint facilities at Philadelphia and Denver.
