February 9, 2006

Washington — The United States Mint today announced that 2006–dated Golden Dollar coins and Kennedy half–dollars will be available in bags and rolls at www.usmint.gov beginning on February 15, 2006, at noon (ET).

Customers can purchase the Golden Dollar in 25–coin rolls for $35.50 and in 250–coin bags for $347.00. The bags and rolls bear either the mint mark of the United States Mint at Philadelphia (“P”) or the mint mark of the United States Mint at Denver (“D”).

American sculptor Glenna Goodacre designed the obverse of the Golden Dollar coin, which features the likeness of Sacagawea, the young Shoshone woman who assisted Lewis and Clark on their exploration of the Louisiana Purchase almost 200 years ago. The reverse design of the coin, by former United States Mint Sculptor–Engraver Thomas D. Rogers, Sr., features a soaring bald eagle and 17 stars, one for each of the states at the time of the Lewis and Clark expedition.

The 2006–dated Kennedy half–dollars will be available in two–roll sets (20 coins per roll) for $35.50, including one mint mark coin roll each from the United States Mint at Philadelphia and the United States Mint at Denver. They are also available in bags of 200 that include an equal number of half–dollars with P and D mint marks, for $135.00.

The obverse design of the half–dollar features a portrait of President John F. Kennedy by Gilroy Roberts, the former Chief Engraver of the United States Mint. The reverse design, by Frank Gasparro, Roberts’ successor as Chief Engraver of the United States Mint, depicts the presidential coat of arms.

Both the Golden Dollar and the Kennedy half–dollar are circulating quality, struck on our main production floors at the United States Mint facilities at Philadelphia and Denver.
