Washington — The United States Mint announced today that 50,000 limited–edition Nebraska Official First Day Coin Covers will be available online at www.usmint.gov, beginning at noon (ET) on April 24, 2006.
Priced at $19.95, the Nebraska Official First Day Coin Cover features two Nebraska commemorative quarter–dollars from March 6, 2006, the first day of mintage — one each bearing a mint mark from the United States Mint facilities at Philadelphia and Denver.
Each limited–edition coin cover includes the two quarters on a handsome display card with a 39–cent United States Lady Liberty and Flag postage stamp. The postmark of April 3, 2006, Bayard, Nebraska, marks the day the Nebraska quarter–dollars were first released to the Federal Reserve Bank and to the public.
Nebraska’s quarter depicts an ox–drawn covered wagon carrying pioneers in the foreground and Chimney Rock, the natural wonder that rises from the valley of North Platte River, measuring 445 feet from base to tip. The sun is in full view behind the wagon. The coin also bears the inscriptions “Nebraska,” “Chimney Rock” and “1867.”
The United States Mint 50 State Quarters Program honors the states in the order that they were admitted into the Union. Five commemorative quarter–dollars are issued each year from 1999 through 2008, at approximately 10–week intervals.
