United States Mint Provides First Glimpse of New Presidential $1 Coin in 10 Cities

January 25, 2007

What: The United States Mint is traveling to ten cities throughout the United States to showcase the first Presidential $1 Coin for local residents. The first coin of the Presidential $1 Coin series, George Washington, goes into circulation on February 15. Local citizens can see the new Presidential $1 Coin up close and personal and get free pictures of themselves on a Presidential $1 Coin rendering. This United States Mint tour will visit Boston, Hartford, Pittsburgh, Chicago, Detroit, Tampa/St. Petersburg, Atlanta, Charlotte, Houston and Dallas/Ft. Worth.

The new Presidential $1 Coins will be used in commerce and collected. They are also educational and fun with four new designs, each featuring an American President, issued each year. A stunning depiction of the Statue of Liberty will be on the reverse side. For the first time since the 1930s, coin inscriptions such as “E Pluribus Unum” and “In God We Trust” will be prominently inscribed on the edge of the coins.

The tour will feature a George Washington historian to discuss the life of our first President, a United States Mint official and the chance for the public to pick up educational materials about the Presidential $1 Coin Program from the United States Mint.
