Preamble to the Declaration of Independence 2020 Platinum Proof Coin - Pursuit of Happiness

As the American Eagle Platinum Proof Coin Program entered its third decade in 2018, the United States Mint introduced a new series featuring three new obverse (heads) designs by one designer and one new common reverse (tails) design. The 2018-2020 Preamble to the Declaration of Independence Platinum Proof Coin Series features a newly designed one-ounce 99.95 percent platinum proof coin issued in each of the series’ three years.

The obverse design of the 2020 Preamble to the Declaration of Independence Platinum Proof Coin – Pursuit of Happiness depicts Lady Liberty harvesting the fruits of her labor with a young girl at play nearby. The overflowing cornucopia she carries is a symbol of the physical, intellectual, and spiritual bounty only liberty makes possible—the good things that nourish the body, enliven the mind, and satisfy the soul. The home, orchard, and silo represent American hopes, values, and aspirations and bring to a close the narrative told throughout the backgrounds of the series—from furrowed earth, to prairies and mountains, and finally to an agrarian field. The stubble field alludes to the ingenuity and exertion required to claim liberty’s promise. The inscription “Happiness,” a facsimile of the handwritten word from the Declaration of Independence, includes the long “s,” a letterform which was typical of its time but is no longer in common use. (Note: the first “s” in happiness on the coin is the long “s.”)

The obverse designs for the three-year series were all created by Artistic Infusion Program (AIP) Designer Justin Kunz.

The common reverse design for this series depicts an eagle in flight with an olive branch in its talons. It was created by AIP Designer Patricia Lucas-Morris.

Each platinum coin is encapsulated and packaged in a black velvet satin-lined presentation case accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity.
