Ronald Reagan Bronze Medal
From Hollywood to the White House, Ronald Reagan is remembered for his impactful policies complimented by his charisma and charm. Starting out as a sports commentator, Reagan went on to appear in 53 movies before serving two terms as the Governor of California. In 1980, Americans chose President Reagan and Vice President George H.W. Bush to tackle economic inflation and tensions with Iran and the Soviet Union. Two months after his inauguration President Reagan was shot outside a hotel in Washington, D.C. Reagan recovered and continued to serve for a two-term Presidency that defined American politics in the 1980s.
Reagan enacted his famous “Reaganomics,” reducing economic regulation, lowering taxes, and promoting free-market capitalism. The economy grew, pulling the Nation from its greatest economic downturn since the Great Depression. In response to the threat of the Cold War, Reagan increased the military’s budget by 35%, stating “We maintain the peace through our strength; weakness only invites aggression.” After a series of meetings with Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev, they signed treaties eliminating intermediate-range nuclear missiles, de-escalating tensions. Although the Soviet Union would not dissipate until 1991, Reagan is largely credited with ending the Cold War.
