William Henry Harrison was President of the United States for just 32 days, making him the shortest serving President in American history. His two-hour inaugural address, the longest in American history, was performed on a cold and wet day by the 68-year-old Harrison who was without a coat or hat. He contracted a pneumonia that took his life before his administration could make its mark on the country.
In his youth William Henry Harrison rebelled against his family by seeking a military career in the Indiana Territory. He quickly moved up the ranks, eventually becoming a Brigadier General. His success at the battle of Tippecanoe, which marked the end of Native American control over the area, propelled him to National fame. Although he had served as the Governor of the Indiana Territory for 12 years, he was thought to be retired from politics when the Whig Party utilized his star power to win the Presidency back from the Democrats. His death, which marked the first of any President while in office, was followed by uncertainty of how fully Vice President John Tyler would take on his unexpected position of President.
