Betty Birdsong currently serves as the Chief of Staff at the United States Mint, a role in which she oversees the management and direction of various programs, facilitates communication between departments, and provides both administrative and strategic support to the executive leadership team. With an extensive career at the Mint, Betty’s vast experience in public service and strategic leadership has been instrumental in shaping the Mint’s operations since joining the agency in September 1992.
Throughout her tenure, Betty has held various significant positions, including Special Advisor, Acting Director of Legislative and Intergovernmental Affairs, Operations Manager, Design Program Manager, Public Affairs Specialist, and Historian. Betty’s most notable contributions have included the conceptualization and management of the Mint’s digital archives and heritage assets program, where she played a pivotal role in preserving the rich history of the Mint’s coinage and designs. A standout achievement was her leadership and oversight of the Native American $1 Coin and the Code Talkers Recognition programs. In these roles, she served as the primary liaison among the Mint, 33 Native American tribes, and six Congressional consultants, all while managing the artists and resulting design portfolios to ensure the success of the programs. Betty’s career is defined by her ability to manage complex projects, foster interdepartmental collaboration, and uphold the Mint’s mission of producing and protecting the nation’s coinage while preserving its rich cultural history.
Betty earned a Bachelor of Science in Business and Communication, a Master of Science in Marketing Management, and an MBA, all from the University of Maryland.
