The Congressional Gold Medal was awarded to Benjamin Berell Ferencz in December 2022 in recognition of his service to the United States and the international community during the Nuremburg trials following World War II. Ferencz was a lifelong advocate for international criminal justice and the rule of law.
The obverse design depicts Benjamin B. Ferencz at a podium during the Nuremberg trials. The inscriptions are “1920 – 2023” and “BENJAMIN B. FERENCZ.”
The reverse design prominently features the inscription “LAW NOT WAR” above the scales of justice and surrounded by olive branches. Five stars at the top of the design represent Ferencz’s military service, and “ACT OF CONGRESS 2022” is inscribed at the bottom.
