A life-long public servant, Bob Dole served his country in numerous ways. From his highly decorated and gallant service in the Army during World War II, to representing his home state of Kansas in the U.S. House of Representatives and Senate, he made a lifelong commitment to public service.
Born July 22, 1923, in Russell, Kansas, Dole proudly served the people of his district and the State of Kansas in Congress for 36 years. During his political career, he was widely known for his bipartisanship, which was especially evident during his work in reforming Social Security and securing passage of the Americans with Disabilities Act in 1990.
After he retired from the Senate, Bob Dole became an advocate and voice for the public good. Among his many accomplishments, he co-chaired the Families of Freedom Scholarship Fund, supporting the educational needs of the families of victims of the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. In 2003, he established the Robert J. Dole Institute of Politics at the University of Kansas to encourage more bipartisanship in politics. As a strong advocate for military veterans, Dole was a weekly volunteer for more than a decade with the Honor Flight Network.
Bob Dole has been honored by many organizations for his achievements both in and out of politics and recognized by several Presidents for his hard work and leadership in the public sector.
The obverse (heads) design of the medal features a portrait of Senator Bob Dole with the U.S. Capitol Building in the background. Inscriptions are “SON OF KANSAS,” “SOLDIER,” “STATESMAN,” and “BOB DOLE.”
The reverse (tails) design depicts a Kansas wheat field below a quote from Senator Dole: “FOR GREATNESS LIES NOT IN WHAT OFFICE YOU HOLD, BUT IN HOW HONEST YOU ARE, IN HOW YOU FACE ADVERSITY, AND IN YOUR WILLINGNESS TO STAND FAST IN HARD PLACES.” The additional inscription “ACT OF CONGRESS 2017” appears along the bottom border.
