James Buchanan was a renowned lawyer, Secretary of State, and the 15th President of the United States. Buchanan was the first U.S. President from Pennsylvania, and the only to never marry. He was a gifted public speaker, a skill which allowed him to be elected five times to the House of Representatives and three times to the Senate. Buchanan was elected as President of the United States in 1856, a time when the Nation was divided over slavery, creating a rift that Buchanan was unable to mend. He lost his bid for re-election, with seven States seceding from the Union before the White House was turned over to his successor, President Abraham Lincoln.
