President James “Jimmy” Carter dedicated his life to the betterment of humanity, both in and out of the White House. Before becoming the 39th President of the United States, Carter served his Nation as a U.S. Navy Lieutenant, a State Senator, and as the Governor of Georgia. As President, he strongly advocated for human rights around the world and made them a cornerstone of his foreign policy. Some of his accomplishments include the establishment of the Department of Energy, conserving over 100 million acres of land for national parks and conservation, establishing diplomatic relations with the People’s Republic of China after decades of tension, the signing of the Panama Canal Treaty of 1977, and President Carter personally mediating the Camp David Accords, resulting in peace between Israel and Egypt.

After his Presidency, Jimmy Carter devoted his efforts to humanitarian causes, establishing The Carter Foundation to help resolve international conflict, promote democracy, protect human rights, and combat serious diseases. In 2002, President Carter became one of four U.S. Presidents to be awarded a Nobel Peace Prize “for his decades of untiring effort to find peaceful solutions to international conflicts, to advance democracy and human rights, and to promote economic and social development.”

The obverse of the medal features a portrait of Jimmy Carter with the inscription “PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES” centered along the top of the medal and the inscription “JIMMY CARTER” centered on the right side of the medal.

Within a wreath of 50 stars, the reverse of the medal features the Presidential Seal with a map of the United States in the background.
