Public Law 115-322, “The Larry Doby Congressional Gold Medal Act,” awards a Congressional Gold Medal in honor of Lawrence Eugene ‘‘Larry’’ Doby in recognition of his achievements and contributions to American athletics, civil rights, and the Armed Forces during World War II.
The obverse (heads) design features Larry Doby with Hinchliffe Stadium in the background. Inscriptions are "LARRY DOBY" and "ACT OF CONGRESS 2018."
The reverse (tails) design depicts Larry Doby and fellow player Steve Gromek embracing after a historic win. The inscription is "WE ARE STRONGER TOGETHER, AS A TEAM, AS A NATION, AS A WORLD."
Doby was a civil rights pioneer, and after his athletic career he continued work in his community. As a result of his contributions, he received an honorary doctoral degree from Long Island, Princeton, and Fairfield Universities, and was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1998.
