The Hawaii State Quarter is the 50th quarter in the 50 State Quarter Program. Hawaii became the 50th state on August 21, 1959. It is known as "The Aloha State." The reverse of Hawaii's quarter features Hawaiian monarch King Kamehameha I stretching his hand toward the eight major Hawaiian Islands. Inscriptions on the coin include the State motto, "UA MAU KE EA O KA 'AINA I KA PONO" ("The life of the land is perpetuated in righteousness"), "HAWAII" and "1959."
The obverse (heads) design features the familiar image of George Washington by John Flanagan, used on the quarter since 1932.
The reverse (tails) design features an image of the Hawaiian monarch King Kamehameha I stretching his hand toward the eight major Hawaiian Islands.
