New Jersey State Quarter

The New Jersey State Quarter is the third coin in the 50 State Quarters Program. The U.S. Mint released it on May 17, 1999 as the third quarter of the year.

The quarter shows General George Washington leading his troops across the Delaware River to Trenton, New Jersey on December 25, 1776. During the next 10 days, the Colonial Army beat the British at the battles of Trenton and Princeton. New Jersey’s location put it at the heart of many famous Revolutionary War battles, giving it name the “Crossroads of the Revolution.”

The coin design is based on an 1851 painting by Emanuel Leutze.

The obverse (heads) design features the familiar image of George Washington by John Flanagan, used on the quarter since 1932.

The reverse (tails) design depicts General George Washington and his troops crossing the Delaware River on December 25, 1776.
