The Louisiana Purchase Exposition Gold Dollar (Jefferson) was released in 1903 in advance of the Louisiana Purchase Exposition. The Exposition was held in St. Louis, Missouri, and it celebrated the centennial of the Louisiana Purchase. This coin, and the Louisiana Purchase Exposition Gold Dollar featuring William McKinley, were the first commemorative gold coins.
Proceeds from sales of the coins were used to fund the 1904 Louisiana Purchase Exposition in St. Louis, Missouri.
The obverse design features Thomas Jefferson in profile.
The reverse features an olive branch.
