The Louisiana Purchase Exposition Gold Dollar (McKinley) was released in 1903 in advance of the Louisiana Purchase Exposition, which was held in St. Louis, Missouri. This coin, and a second Louisiana Purchase Exposition Gold Dollar featuring Thomas Jefferson, were the first commemorative gold coins.
Proceeds from sales of the coins were used to fund the 1904 Louisiana Purchase Exposition in St. Louis, Missouri.
The obverse design features President William McKinley in profile.
The reverse features an olive branch.
