The United States Mint’s release of the 2026 Declaration of Independence Quarter featuring a special "July 4" privy mark has done more than commemorate America's 250th anniversary—it has inspired excitement, nostalgia, and a new generation of coin enthusiasts.
The public first learned about the existence of the 250,000 “July 4” privy mark quarters on June 23 through the media. A few hours prior to the Mint’s press release going live, Mint Director Paul Hollis spoke with two dozen reporters across major television network affiliates nationwide revealing the unique opportunity to the public.
Rather than offering the marked “July 4” quarters as a separate product, the Mint wanted all Americans to have an opportunity at finding one. The Mint randomly mixed the coins into bulk bags, which were first wrapped and then shipped to the Federal Reserve Bank for nationwide distribution to financial institutions.
While the initial news generated a buzz across social media, the desire to find one of the unique quarters was even greater by Independence Day:
"Let the privy hunting commence!"
"This is so cool. I can't wait to start hunting for these!"
"I LOVE it. I'm new to coin collecting and this will be my first time coin hunting at a bank."
On Independence Day, the first 250 customers to the Gift Shop at the United States Mint at Philadelphia received one of the special privy mark quarters (one per household). Many visitors shared that they plan to pass the coin down through generations as a family keepsake and memento of this historic day.
For many Americans, the coin rekindled fond memories of collecting the 1776-1976 Bicentennial Quarter:
"Awesome! I remember the Bicentennial quarters. So fun!"
The special privy mark quarter demonstrates how circulating coinage can do more than facilitate commerce. It can inspire curiosity, encourage exploration of our Nation's history, and bring communities together through a shared experience.
As America celebrates its 250th anniversary, the Mint's Semiquincentennial Coin Program continues to create memorable moments for longtime collectors and introduces countless others to the excitement of finding a piece of history and an unexpected treasure in their change.
