Second Vistas of Liberty — Design Honors Southeastern United States

Tenth Ounce Mintage Raised to 20,000 Coins

Order on the mint website at www.USMINT.gov beginning August 27

Washington, D.C. — The U.S. Mint today announced that 1999 American Eagle Platinum Proof Coins will go on sale July 23, featuring the second of the five–year Vistas of Liberty — reverse designs.

"The Vistas of Liberty — series has made the arrival of Platinum Proof a much anticipated numismatic event," said Mint Director Philip N. Diehl. "Coins sold out in four options last year — the Half Ounce, the Quarter Ounce, the Tenth Ounce, and the Four Coin Set – and Platinum Proof remains one of the mint's lowest mintage products, so customers will want to act fast.

John Mercanti's 1999 reverse design depicts the once–endangered native American Alligator, and our country's proud symbol, the Bald Eagle, in a blend of incuse and relief techniques celebrating the heritage of our Nation's southeastern region. The obverse, also by Mercanti, is Lady Liberty, America's paradigm of freedom and courage.

Platinum Proof American Eagles prices remain at the 1998 level: $695 for the one–ounce; $395 for the half–ounce; $199 for the quarter–ounce, $99 for the tenth–ounce; and $1,350 for the Four Coin Set. All American Eagle Platinum Proof Coins are presented in luxurious black velvet packaging, and are accompanied by an official Certificate of Authenticity.

American Eagle Platinum Proof Coins will be available until 12/31/99, or a sellout, whichever comes first. Mintage of these coins is strictly limited; orders received after mintage limits have been reached will not be processed.
