Washington, D.C. — The U.S. Mint today announced that 1999 American Eagle Platinum Proof Coins will go on sale July 23, featuring the second of the five–year Vistas of Liberty — reverse designs.
“The Vistas of Liberty — series has made the arrival of Platinum Proof a much anticipated numismatic event,” said Mint Director Philip N. Diehl. “Coins sold out in four options last year — the Half Ounce, the Quarter Ounce, the Tenth Ounce, and the Four Coin Set – and Platinum Proof remains one of the mint’s lowest mintage products, so customers will want to act fast.
John Mercanti’s 1999 reverse design depicts the once–endangered native American Alligator, and our country’s proud symbol, the Bald Eagle, in a blend of incuse and relief techniques celebrating the heritage of our Nation’s southeastern region. The obverse, also by Mercanti, is Lady Liberty, America’s paradigm of freedom and courage.
