United States Mint Announces 2002 American Eagle Gold &Silver Proof Coins Available June 5, 2002

May 22, 2002

WASHINGTON — The United States Mint announced today that the 2002 American Eagle Gold and Silver Proof coins will be available on June 5, 2002, at 12:00 Noon (EDT).

“These two coins feature two of the most popular obverse coin designs in history and recall the golden era of coinage during which these designs were first produced,” said Director Henrietta Holsman Fore. “Proof Gold Eagles bear the same obverse design that as the historic 1933 Gold Double Eagle, which will be placed on auction by the United States Mint on July 30, 2002, in New York City.”

The American Eagle Gold Proof coins bear internationally renowned sculptor Augustus Saint–Gaudens’ image of Liberty holding a torch and an olive branch aloft, first issued in 1907. The American Eagle Silver Proof coin features sculptor Adolph A. Weinman’s ‘Walking Liberty’ design, depicting Liberty striding confidently toward a rising sun, first issued as the obverse of the Half Dollar in 1916. Both coins are struck at the United States Mint’s West Point facility and bear the “W” mint mark.

Each 2002 American Eagle Proof coin is sealed in a protective capsule, comes in a presentation case, and is accompanied by an official Certificate of Authenticity, documenting the coin’s place in history.

The American Eagle Gold Proof one–ounce coin sells for $570 (8,000 individual coins available/maximum mintage, 33,000); the half–ounce coin sells for $285 (7,000 individual coins available/maximum mintage, 32,000); the quarter–ounce coin sells for $150 (11,000 individual coins available/maximum mintage, 36,000); the one–tenth ounce coin sells for $70 (25,000 individual coins/maximum mintage 50,000; and the four–coin set, which includes a coin of each of the denominations, sells for $999 (25,000 individual sets available). The American Eagle Silver Proof one–ounce coin remains at $24 and has a maximum mintage of 750,000.

Because mintages of the 2002 American Eagle Proof coins are limited and likely to sell out, customers are encouraged to place their orders early. The sale of the 2002 American Eagle Gold Proof coins will end December 31, 2002, or upon sellout, whichever comes first. American Eagle Silver Proof coins are available for sale while quantities last or until the 2003 coins are issued.
