2006 Return to Monticello Nickel Official First Day Coin Cover Available March 28

March 27, 2006

Washington — The United States Mint today announced that limited–edition “Return to Monticello” Nickel Official First Day Coin Covers will be available online at www.usmint.gov beginning at noon (ET) on March 28, 2006. This product is limited up to 50,000 units.

Priced at $19.95, the Official First Day Coin Cover features two Return to Monticello nickels — one each from the United States Mint at Denver and Philadelphia. Struck at Denver on December 29, 2005, and at Philadelphia on January 4, 2006, the coins are mounted on a handsome display card with a cancelled 39–cent United States Lady Liberty and Flag postage stamp.

The postmark of January 12, 2006, Charlottesville, Virginia, marks the day the Return to Monticello nickel was first released to the Federal Reserve Bank and to the public, certifying this limited edition. The Return to Monticello nickel is the fifth and final reverse design in the Westward Journey Nickel Series™, authorized by Public Law 108–15, to commemorate the bicentennials of the Louisiana Purchase and the Lewis and Clark expedition. The obverse features the first image of a United States President facing forward on a coin.
