Thomas Jefferson was an American Founding father, Governor of Virginia, Secretary of State, Vice President, and the third President of the United States. Jefferson was the primary author of the Nation’s founding document, the Declaration of Independence, successfully transcribing the principles of a hopeful young Nation into words that still uphold American values two centuries later. Some of the most iconic words in American history can be credited to Jefferson, such as “We hold these truths to be self-evident: that all men are created equal…”.
Jefferson was instrumental in governing the Nation during and immediately after the Revolutionary War and was elected President in 1800, serving two terms. During his Presidency, Jefferson worked to manage the national debt left over from the war, reducing it by half. He oversaw the Louisiana Purchase, doubling the size of the United States and sparking America’s westward expansion. After his Presidency, he retired to his famous Viriginia home, Monticello, which is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
