Background

The New Mexico quarter is the 47th coin released in the 50 State Quarters Program because New Mexico was the 47th state to be admitted into the Union, in 1912. The coin's obverse features a Zia sun symbol superimposed over a topographical outline of the State. Inscriptions on the coin are "Land of Enchantment," "New Mexico" and "1912."

Characteristics

The obverse (heads) design features the familiar image of George Washington by John Flanagan, used on the quarter since 1932.

The reverse (tails) design features a Zia sun symbol over a topographical outline of the State.
