National Park Service 100th Anniversary Commemorative Coins

In 2016, the National Park Service (NPS) celebreated its 100th anniversary. Public Law 113-291 authorized the U.S. Mint to create the National Park Service 100th Anniversary Commemorative Coin Program to honor the agency's centennial. Under that law, Congress directed the Mint to strike and issue up to 100,000 $5 gold coins, 500,000 silver dollars, and 750,000 clad half dollar coins.

Background

The National Park Service has had stewardship of America’s national parks since 1916, when President Woodrow Wilson signed legislation creating the agency. It oversees approximately 400 sites covering some 84 million acres in the United States and its territories. In addition to national parks, the NPS system includes monuments, battlefields, military parks, historical parks, historic sites, lakeshores, seashores, recreation areas, scenic rivers and trails, as well as the White House. More than 20,000 NPS employees care for these sites with help from dedicated volunteers and park partners.

Recipient Organization

Prices for the coins include surcharges of $35 for each gold coin, $10 for each silver coin and $5 for each half dollar clad coin. The law authorized the surcharges to be paid to the National Park Foundation for projects that help preserve and protect resources under the stewardship of the NPS and promote public enjoyment and appreciation of these resources.
