In 2016, the National Park Service (NPS) celebreated its 100th anniversary. Public Law 113-291 authorized the U.S. Mint to create the National Park Service 100th Anniversary Commemorative Coin Program to honor the agency's centennial. Under that law, Congress directed the Mint to strike and issue up to 100,000 $5 gold coins, 500,000 silver dollars, and 750,000 clad half dollar coins.
