Coin Finishes, Defined

Coin Collage Graphic with Platinum Proof Coin

ICYMI, the Mint's 2026 Product Schedule is finally here, and we've got a busy year ahead. Between one-year-only releases celebrating America’s Semiquincentennial, brand new Comic Art Coins & Medals, FIFA Commemorative Coins, and classic coins like American Eagle, Liberty, and Buffalo, there's something for every type of collector.

But with so many precious metal coins in different sizes, qualities, and finishes, it can be hard to keep it all straight. So, we’re here to help you decide which one is the best fit for you through this handy guide.

Click on each coin to explore our Coin Glossary for the type of finish and what makes it unique.

Coin designs can be enhanced through frosting and polishing, using higher quality base metals, and repeated striking to bring out more details in the finished product. This is most noticeable with enhanced designs (where frosting and polishing are applied only to certain elements) and proof designs (where frosting and polishing is applying to the entire design in varying degrees).

United States Mint offers a variety of coins with different finishes that speak to each collector. Explore our full collection and discover the incredible technology and artistic flare behind each of our one-of-a-kind coins.

The Mighty Dollar Coin

Iowa American Innovation & Native American Dollar Coins

It's another big year for the Mighty Dollar Coin as we start off strong with the American Innovation $1 Coin - Iowa and the 2026 Native American $1 Coin honoring the Oneida Tribe at Valley Forge. That's only the beginning, though, with special Morgan and Peace Silver Dollars, American Innovation $1 Coins, and even a gold 1804 Dollar Coin scheduled to release in 2026.

Although it's rare to find a dollar coin in your pocket change these days, dollars are enduring collectibles with a rich history dating back to 1794.

Browse our historical gallery below to explore the impressive history of the dollar coin, from Flowing Hair to Seated Liberty to Sacagawea and everything in between.
