On September 24, the Mint launches the fifth and final Best of the Mint product. The 1907 Saint-Gaudens High Relief $20 Gold Coin and Silver Medal Set honors, well . . . the name kind of gives it away.
Saint-Gaudens' Double Eagle is the stuff of legends. Widely regarded as the most beautiful U.S. coin ever struck, this double eagle almost never flew. If you don't know the story behind the coin, it's worth a read.
During the early 1900s, President Theodore Roosevelt launched a new initiative to overhaul the artistic quality of American coinage. Roosevelt began his endeavor by working with artists Bela Lyon Pratt and Augustus Saint-Gaudens to redesign gold eagles.
The redesigns that Saint-Gaudens undertook were not without serious challenges, though. Saint-Gaudens admitted to Roosevelt in a 1906 letter that he was "scared blue" at the thought of such an important assignment and that the responsibility loomed over him "like a spectre." (NPS)
Both the $10 eagle and $20 double eagle designs were met with immediate criticism, as well, owing to the fact that they ommited the phrase "In God We Trust." This led to Public Law 60-120, which restored the phrase in 1909.
Most seriously, though, Saint-Gaudens had been diagnosed with colon cancer in 1900. His work on the double eagle represents not just the crowning achievement of a great artist's body of work but the final chapter of his life. Augustus Saint-Gaudens died in August of 1907, roughly three months before the Saint-Gaudens $20 Gold Coin was released into circulation.

Inscriptions are “LIBERTY” and “2026.” The reverse design features Supergirl™ and Krypto™ surrounded by a starburst effect. Inscriptions are “BRAVERY LIFTS HER” and “GRACE GUIDES HER.”
But that's not all! There's plenty more Super Hero action planned for 2026. The Mint will also release gold coins and silver medals featuring Robin™—fearless and fiercely loyal, the ultimate sidekick with serious skills—and Green Lantern™—a glowing symbol of honor and willpower.

Although the FIFA World Cup commemorative coins are not curved, the Mint has made several such coins in recent years. The National Baesball Hall of Fame Commemorative Coins in 2014 were the first curved coins ever minted by the U.S. Mint.
Research and development of these coins was unprecedented in modern U.S. Mint history. It covered height of relief limitations; milling, turning and grinding operations; coinability issues; laser frosting and proof polishing; and proof, uncirculated, and clad test strikes.
3. (D) Greatest Generation $5 Uncirculated Gold Coin
Mint Chief Engraver Joseph Menna sculpted the reverse of the Greatest Generation Uncirculated Gold Coin. The common reverses of the FIFA World Cup coins were sculpted by Phebe Hemphill. The Breast Cancer Awareness Commermative Coin reverse was sculpted by Renata Gordon, while the U.S. Marine Corps gold reverse was sculpted by Craig Campbell.
