Background

This medal is a bronze replica of the Congressional Gold Medal presented to Lawrence Eugene “Larry” Doby in recognition of his achievements and contributions to American major league athletics, civil rights, and the Armed Forces during World War II. Congress authorized the medal on December 17, 2018. It was presented on December 13, 2023. The Mint issued the bronze medal duplicates in 3.0 inch and 1.5 inch sizes.

Larry Doby was a civil rights pioneer, and after his athletic career he continued to work in his community. As a result of his contributions, he received an honorary doctoral from Long Island, Princeton, and Fairfield Universities, and was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1998.
