2003 American Eagle Proof Gold Coins Available May 13

May 1, 2003

Washington, D.C. — The United States Mint announced today that the 2003 American Eagle Gold Proof Coins will be available for sale on May 13, 2003, at 12:00 noon (E.D.T.).

The American Eagle Gold Proof Coins, which were first issued in 1907, bear internationally renowned sculptor Augustus Saint–Gaudens’ image of Liberty holding a torch and an olive branch aloft. The coins are struck at the United States Mint’s West Point facility and bear the “W” mint mark. Each 2003 American Eagle Gold Proof Coin is sealed in a protective capsule; mounted in a handsome, satin–lined velvet presentation case; and accompanied by an official Certificate of Authenticity, documenting the coin’s place in history.

The newly adjusted price and mintage limits for the 2003 American Eagle Gold Proof Coins are:

Coin Price Maximum Mintage Product Limit
Four–coin set $1,098 21,000
One–ounce $630 29,000 8,000
Half–ounce $315 29,000 8,000
Quarter–ounce $165 31,000 10,000
Tenth–ounce $85 46,000 25,000

This is not the first price adjustment to this program. The last price adjustment for American Eagle Gold Proof Coins — $570 for the one–ounce coin — was set for 1998–dated coins, marking a 2.5 percent decrease over its previous price of $589, set in 1996. This was the product’s fourth price adjustment since the program’s inception in 1986. The sales price of the 1990 –1995–dated coins was $570, 1987–dated coins were $585 and 1986–dated coins $550. All adjustments were made to compensate for fluctuating gold prices, which impact overall production costs for this program. There presently is no plan to change the coin’s design.

Because mintages of the 2003 American Eagle Gold Proof Coins are limited, orders should be placed early. American Eagle Gold Proof Coins are available for sale until December 31, 2003, or while quantities last. The United States Mint reserves the right to limit quantities and may discontinue accepting orders at any time.

The 2003 American Eagle Silver Proof Coins are already available from the United States Mint, and the 2003 American Eagle Platinum Proof Coins will be available later this year.
