2020 First Spouse Bronze Medal Barbara Bush Obverse

The United States Mint honors the nation’s first spouses through the First Spouse Gold Coins Program, which began in 2007. As authorized by the Presidential $1 Coin Act of 2005 (Public Law 109-145), bronze medal duplicates of the coins are also produced and issued on the same schedule.

The medals bear the same central images as the gold coins and are also inscribed with the name, the order, and years of their term as first spouse. When a president served without a first spouse, the obverse designs are emblematic of Liberty as depicted on a circulating coin of that era.
