Mint Announces Unlimited FDR Two–Coin Set

June 4, 1997

Washington, D.C. — The U.S. Mint today announced an unlimited edition for the Franklin Delano Roosevelt Two–Coin Proof and Uncirculated Set, which went of sale May 16. The Two–Coin Set was originally intended as a limited edition of 5,000 sets; however, the limited edition was not announced in pre–issue discount promotional materials released by the Mint. Therefore, to ensure fairness to all customers, the FDR Two–Coin Proof and Uncirculated Set will be sold as long as coins are available.

Customers ordering the FDR Two–Coin Set with the understanding that it would be a limited edition may cancel their orders and receive a full refund any time through July 1.

The Franklin Delano Roosevelt Commemorative Gold Coin is available at pre– issue discount prices of $195 for the proof coin, $180 for the uncirculated coin, and $350 for the Two–Coin Proof and Uncirculated Set through July 15. Thereafter, the proof coin will sell for $225, the uncirculated coin for $205, and the Two–Coin Set for $399.

Also available at the pre–issue discount through July 15 are the Gold Proof Lapel Pin for $250 ($275 thereafter), the Gold Proof Pendant for $240 ($270 thereafter), and the Gold Proof Pendant with chain for $365 ($390 thereafter).

The obverse, by U.S. Mint Sculptor/Engraver T. James Ferrell, is based on one of President Roosevelt’s favorite photographs, a 1938 portrait of the commander–in–chief reviewing the U.S. fleet in San Francisco Bay. The reverse, by Mint graphic designer Jim Peed, bears a rendering of the Presidential seal displayed at FDR’s 1933 inauguration, featuring an eagle in bold relief with its wings outstretched over a circle of stars, with its talons clinging to the “1933” date. Mint Sculptor/ Engraver Thomas D. Rogers, Sr., sculpted the reverse design.

A portion of the proceeds from the sale of the coins helps fund the construction and maintenance of the Franklin Delano Roosevelt Memorial, which was dedicated in Washington, D.C. on May 2.
