WASHINGTON — The United States Mint today announced new prices for its bronze medals — the first official price increase since 1995. The prices will be effective April 19, 2002.
Authorized by Congress, Commemorative Medals honor outstanding persons, events, and sites of special meaning to the American people. The Mint produces duplicates or miniature replicas of Congressionally authorized gold medals presented to individuals for notable achievements, including medals honoring military heroes, veterans, and the armed services; American and world leaders and statesmen; contributions to American arts and culture; pioneers of flight; achievements in science and medicine; and U.S. Presidents. Only bronze medals are available for sale to the public.
The price increases will affect the entire offering of bronze medals. The price of the large three–inch bronze multi–strike duplicate medals will be increased from $24.50 to $38.00. The 1–1/2 inch bronze medals will be increased from $2.50 to $3.00, and the 1–5/16 inch bronze medals will be increased from $1.00 to $2.75.
Over the last 6 years, prices for the bronze medals have not changed despite rising costs of production — both labor and materials. By adjusting prices, the Mint will ensure that the medals program remains in compliance with authorizing legislation, which requires that the medals be sold “at a price sufficient to cover the costs thereof, including labor, materials, dies, use of machinery, overhead expenses, and the cost of materials.”
Duplicate bronze medals and miniature bronze replicas are available from the United States Mint at the Union Station Sales Center, 50 Massachusetts Avenue, N.E., Washington, D.C. 20002. Customers can contact the Union Station Sales Center by calling (202) 289–0609. The bronze medals are also available at the Visitors Center at the Bureau of Engraving and Printing, located at 15th and C Streets, S.W., Washington, D.C. 20228.
In addition, customers may also purchase the bronze medals two ways. First, beginning April 19th, they can order online using the Mint’s secure website at http://www.usmint.gov. Second, they may call 1–800–USA–MINT (872–6468). Hearing and speech–impaired customers may order by calling 1–888–321–MINT (6468). Please allow approximately 2–3 weeks for delivery.
