Two New Members Appointed to Citizens Coinage Advisory Committee

April 5, 2012

WASHINGTON — The United States Mint is pleased to announce the appointment of two new members to the Citizens Coinage Advisory Committee (CCAC). These appointments fill two vacancies created by the expiration of the appointment of Arthur Houghton, the member specially qualified because of his education, training or experience in numismatic curation; and the resignation of Doreen Bolger, a member representing the interests of the general public in the coinage of the United States.

Robert Hoge was appointed as the member specially qualified to serve by virtue of his education, training or experience in numismatic curation. Mr. Hoge is curator of North American Coins and Currency for the American Numismatic Society (ANS), and an award–winning columnist of ANS Magazine. In addition, he is president of the New York Numismatic Club. From 1981 to 2001, he served as curator for the ANA's Money Museum in Colorado Springs and manager of its Authentication Bureau. Mr. Hoge holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in anthropology and history from the University of Colorado at Boulder, and a teaching certification in social sciences.

Jeanne Stevens–Sollman was appointed to represent the interests of the general public. She is a leader in the field of medallic sculpture whose work is exhibited in museums throughout the United States and Europe, as well as numerous private collections. Ms. Stevens–Sollman served as the past president of the American Medallic Sculpture Association and is the U.S. vice delegate to the Federation Internationale de la Medaille. In August 2007, she received the ANA's Award of Excellence in Medallic Sculpture. Ms. Stevens–Sollman holds a Bachelor of Science degree and a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Rhode Island College and a Master of Fine Arts degree from Pennsylvania State University.

The CCAC, established by an Act of Congress in 2003, advises the Secretary of the Treasury on theme or design proposals relating to circulating coinage, bullion coinage, Congressional Gold Medals and other medals produced by the United States Mint. The CCAC also makes commemorative coin recommendations to the Secretary and advises on the events, persons or places to be commemorated, as well as on the mintage levels and proposed designs.

The CCAC is subject to the authority of the Secretary of the Treasury. The United States Mint is responsible for providing necessary and appropriate administrative support, technical services and advice.

The CCAC submits an annual report to Congress and the Secretary of the Treasury, describing its activities and providing recommendations.

The United States Mint, created by Congress in 1792, is the Nation's sole manufacturer of legal tender coinage and is responsible for producing circulating coinage for the Nation to conduct its trade and commerce. The United States Mint also produces proof, uncirculated and commemorative coins; Congressional Gold Medals; and silver, gold and platinum bullion coins.
