WASHINGTON – The Rutherford B. Hayes Presidential Silver Medal will be available for purchase directly from the United States Mint (Mint) starting on February 13 at noon EST. Hayes was an American lawyer and politician who served as the 19th President of the United States from 1877 to 1881, after serving in the U.S. House of Representatives and as Governor of Ohio.
The Department of the Treasury has a long-standing tradition of honoring each President of the United States with an official bronze medal struck by the Mint. The Mint is now replicating this series of medals in 99.9 percent fine silver, each measuring 1.598 inches in diameter.
The obverse design and reverse designs are by sculptor George T. Morgan.
The obverse (heads) depicts a portrait of Rutherford B. Hayes with the inscription “RUTHERFORD B. HAYES.”
The reverse (tails) features a laurel wreath and the inscriptions “PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES” and “INAUGURATED MARCH 5. 1877.”
Each medal is encapsulated and comes with a Certificate of Authenticity.
